The U.S. Department of Energy has given us this opportunity to show the world how we can advance affordable and sustainable housing, but we cannot do it without your support! Architecture

The design of the 4D Home responds to the harsh dynamic climate of New England.
Compact Form
Compact Form

For greater efficiency and simplicity of construction, the form of the 4D Home is a single level extruded gable profile. The compact organization of space improves the surface area to volume ratio of the envelope.

Structural System
Structural System

The structure of the 4D Home responds to the need for modular assembly and minimal thermal bridging. The floor, walls and roof are framed using I-Joists creating large cavities for insulation. Within the vaulted ceiling, two trusses span the entire length of the house allowing the roof to be assembled as two large components.

Trellises
Trellises

A dynamic series of outdoor rooms is created by two offset trellises, each echo’s the house’s gable form and offers shelter from the elements. The southern trellis supports the home’s photovoltaic (PV) array utilizing the solar panels as a shading material.
